A Realization of Care for the Elderly Based on Education of Care - Focused on Ethics of Care in Eva F. Kittay

Abstract
Traditionally, family members have taken full responsibility for the care of elderly people in our society. However, as our society increasingly becomes a small-family-based, aging society, changes to this family-centered care system have become necessary. In this aging society, the care for the elderly has been expanding from the private domain (family) to the public domain in which professional care workers provide care services. To provide proper care, care workers must attain a holistic understanding of care through education that includes aspects such as emotional care for the elderly. However, in reality, that has not been the case. This is often true because they receive training from practice-centered programs that focus on skills such as nursing. Therefore, it is necessary for professional care workers to receive training from care programs that include emotional care.
In this paper, we propose an education program of care based on the ethics of care put forth by Eva F. Kittay. This program is comprised of two courses. One course is directed at professional care workers and it focuses on maintaining the quality of the care provided. The other course is for care instructors who train professional care workers. This education program of care will contribute to establishing a desirable culture of senior care in our society.
